Environmental Impacts of Fire on Forest Ecosystems Across the Globe

About this Special Issue

Background

FuegoRED is a research network created in 2007 aiming for a more direct knowledge transfer between scientists and society. The XI FuegoRED 2024 International Congress will be held in Salamanca (Spain), in October 2024. This Special Issue targets this specific FuegoRED event but is open to additional research contributions on the role of fire on forest ecosystem, social processes and perception and forest sustainable management.

Earth was burning before we exist and will continue after we disappear. However, fire patterns are changing worldwide as climate warming and land use changes are modifying fire regimes in many regions. Apart from the shift in fire regimes, fire is becoming common in regions and ecosystems that were not fire-prone in the past. This context of change poses new challenges in the understanding of the potential impacts of fire regimes on forest ecosystems across the globe. In this sense, it is of particular interest the advancement on the effects of forest fires on soils, water and plant communities, as well as on ecological processes such as nutrient and water cycling, or erosion that are key factors controlling the provision of ecosystem services essential for human life.

The scientific understanding of these fire impacts on these ecosystem compartments and processes, constitutes the basis on which to identify and develop appropriate forest management strategies. Likewise, the assessment of the effectiveness of forest management treatments in building more resistant and resilient ecosystems and landscapes, is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed to guarantee the provision of ecosystem services in the current context of change. It is therefore urgent that researchers, stakeholders and decision-makers around the world pay attention to this issue. We look forward to receiving manuscript submissions on these areas. All manuscripts are published once fully reviewed, ensuring your work is accessible as soon as possible. The Spanish Journal of Soil Science has an Impact Factor of 2.0 and Citescore of 2.2.
