Transformative Approaches in Transdermal and Dermal Drug Delivery: In Vitro and In Vivo Applications

About this Special Issue

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Summary Submission Deadline 31 March 2025 | Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 June 2025

Background

Transdermal and dermal drug delivery systems have become pivotal in modern pharmaceutical research due to their potential for enhancing therapeutic outcomes, reducing systemic side effects, and improving patient compliance. Unlike traditional oral or injectable routes, these systems provide a non-invasive means of delivering drugs directly through the skin, enabling controlled release and targeted delivery. Within this space, novel techniques such as nanotechnology-based systems, microneedles, and innovative formulations have shown immense promise in overcoming the skin’s natural barrier and delivering a diverse range of therapeutic agents.

This Special Issue aims to invite researchers from the pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering, and clinical research fields to contribute original findings, comprehensive reviews, and case reports that highlight the development, characterisation, and application of novel transdermal and dermal drug delivery systems.

We encourage submissions that explore:
• The design, synthesis, and evaluation of nanotechnology-based formulations for enhanced skin penetration.
• The development and in vivo assessment of microneedle-based drug delivery systems.
• The potential of hybrid approaches combining nanotechnology with traditional or new materials to improve drug delivery outcomes.
• Safety and biocompatibility studies of advanced transdermal systems.
• Clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of novel transdermal techniques.
• Innovative approaches to overcoming challenges associated with drug stability, formulation, and skin irritation.
